Astronomy and Space Science Education for Kids
SPACE has conducted astronomy courses in many schools of India and has done more than 2000 night observations. Every year around 5000 students are educated in astronomy and space sciences by SPACE via science projects, tours, camps, quizzes, events and latest technology.

SPACE is the first organization in India to drive Astronomy as an applied science subject in schools. SPACE equips schools with:

SPACE is also negotiating with the state of Himachal Pradesh (H.P.) to start the science education program for middle school students in partnership with the Directorate of Education, Government of H.P. SPACE will also launch UitS in H.P.

Universe in the School (UitS)

The ‘Universe in the School’ program follows an innovative method to train and educate the students in astronomy and space science. Students participate in hands-on activities, projects, experiments, games and quiz instead of cramming facts. The kids apply their minds, question and pursue reasons behind scientific phenomena and facts.

UitS doesn’t just sow the seed of scientific temperament in the minds of the students, but also boosts self-confidence and rational thought. Rational thought reinforces individuals pursuing a career in any stream – art, commerce or science. These confident scientific thinkers will grow into a responsible and aware community, ready to meet the unprecedented demand for professionals educated in astronomy and space science in the future.

Space Club

Students also have the opportunity to enrol in the Space Club, which offers certification courses on astronomy and space science education, at three levels – beginner, intermediate and advanced. The courses include outdoor scientific camps, and day and evening observations carried out within and outside the school campus.

The students primarily learn science by observing and analyzing objects around them. The courses teach budding astronomers various skills including:

    • focussing a telescope on a celestial object
    • identifying celestial objects
                                                    • identifying directions without any aid
                                                    • finding local time

Space Club is running successfully for the past 7 years in over 100 schools of Delhi and NCR and is now active in Hyderabad, Kolkata and Bangalore also. SPACE’s activities and hands-on experimental procedures find mention in text books of various national and international universities and websites

Astro-Tourism for Astronomy and Space Science Enthusiasts
Astro-Tourism is SPACE’s specialization. SPACE has tie-ups with travel companies, national and international government agencies, scientific institutions, space agencies and observatories. Packages will include opportunities such as:

Astronomy and Space Science Experience with the Digital Mobile Planetarium
SPACE with its partner Leo, provide Digital Mobile Planetariums, called DIGISKYs, to schools across India. The planetarium shows are constantly updated with the latest events in astronomy and space science and cater to kids from kindergarten onwards.

The space requirement for the portable Digital Mobile Planetarium is a minimum floor area of 22 feet by 20 feet and a clear height of 11 feet. It can be easily set up in a hall, cafeteria, gym, auditorium or even a tent. The setup time is also less than an hour.

At least 80 schools in North India have used the Digital Mobile Planetarium as a means of educating students in astronomy and space sciences since the last 2 years. DIGISKY is popular among children and teachers alike, and will soon be seen in more schools across India.

• International Solar Eclipse Workshop, January 2009

The International Year of Astronomy started on a high note for India, with the organisation of the International Solar Eclipse Workshop at Delhi. The workshop presented eminent members of the International Eclipse Chasers and the scientists’ fraternity. Some of the noted speakers were:

    o Prof. Jay Pasachoff, famous eclipse chaser of 47 eclipses
    o Prof. Arnab Rai Choudhuri, Professor, Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
    o Mr. Jay Anderson, the first name that comes to any eclipse chasers’ mind when planning an expedition             site and its weather statistics. He works with Fred Espenak in finalizing the NASA Eclipse bulletin.
    o Mr. Sheridan Williams, Council Member of the British Astronomical Association.

• Heliodyssey 2009, 2008 and 2006
Students from all over India have participated in the Heliodyssey, a one of a kind project which brings together professionals, amateurs and academia. Students from all over India were taken on a fully sponsored trip to the Solar Eclipse sites —Turkey in 2006, Russia in 2008 and China in 2009 — along with astronomers and teachers to perform experiments.

Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, then President of India met the team members of Heliodyssey 2006 and appreciated SPACE’s efforts.

• Project Khoj, Search for Greenwich of India, 2004–2006
Project Khoj, a multi-phase project, involved locating the IST (Indian Standard Time) line near Mirzapur by groups of teachers and students from across India.

Khoj is mentioned in the Oxford University Press text book “Maps, Measurements and Meanings”. The Khoj team observed and physically located the longitude time line 82.5° at Ghamapur near Mirzapur.

• Vamana Project, 2004
The Vamana Project involved measuring the Earth through observation and experimentation using the Venus transit. This was the first opportunity in the field of Science Education in India where 25000 students from 250 schools across 16 cities of India participated in a 3 stage scientific project, calculating the distance between the Earth and the Sun with an accuracy of 2% of the present accepted value.

• World Space Exploration Year (WSEY)
SPACE announced October 2007 to October 2008 as World Space Exploration Year in celebration of 50 years of human space exploration. WSEY was inaugurated by Mrs. Sunita Williams, astronaut of Indian origin during her visit to India.

• Space Satellite Project
SPACE is the pioneer organization to design and construct its own satellite (tube satellite) under a project with undergraduate student groups. The successful designing and completion has already placed the organization amongst the forefront innovators in the field of space sciences, as the first non-government body to achieve the feat. Launching of the satellite will be a record achievement for India and SPACE. This achievement is unparalleled worldwide and would be a breakthrough in Indian space sciences.
